WARRIOR ROAD
The Story of Sullivan's March through Pennsylvania, Before the Invasion of
The Iroquois Homelands

AUGUST 23 and Sunday, August 24, 2008

Your tour travels the route of the Revolutionary War campaign known commonly as Sullivan’s March
(in Pennsylvania) or the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign
(in New York). Although there is debate among scholars as to whether Sullivan was “successful” in his mission, there is no doubt that the events of May-September, 1779 were monumental in scope. This campaign, while an astounding military feat, was a tragic devastation of the ancient homelands of the Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations.

Hear the amazing stories of the complex political causes and the far-reaching consequences of Sullivan’s March as you ride through breath-taking scenery, along the route the army took in 1779 from Easton, PA to the Newtown Battlefield near Elmira, NY.  Present day evidence of ancestral Native and Colonial cultures are brought to light in this tour that is sure to change the way you look at this region.

NOTE:
The guided tour itself begins in Easton, PA. Passengers can park and board the motor-coach on Saturday morning at one of 3 convenient locations:

  • Elmira, NY

  • Wilkes-Barre, PA

  • Easton, PA

You will be returned to that location on Sunday at the conclusion of your tour.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 2008
 ____________________________________

6:00 am     Shuttle departs from Elmira, NY

8:30 am     Shuttle makes pick-up in Wilkes-Barre, PA, en route to Easton, PA.

10:00 am     Guided Tour begins at the fully restored 1753 Bachmann Publick House in Easton with an opening presentation and morning refreshments. Easton is where, after receiving General Washington’s orders, General John Sullivan gathered his army. The Bachmann House was a tavern where Sullivan and his men met before embarking on their historic march. Take a short walk to the First United Church of Christ, a site where peace meetings were held between Congressional “peace commissioners” and representatives of the Indian nations and where thanksgiving services were held both before the March and on the army’s return.

Board the motorcoach with your historic guides. As you ride, your guide will continue unfold the incredible story of the tumultuous political events leading up to the March, recorded victoriously by American historians, but remembered much differently by those of Native descent.

Take a brief tour of the Pennsylvania Longrifle Museum and pick up a boxed lunch to enjoy on the bus. Continue on through the Pocono Mountains, once an inhospitable landscape in 1779, it is now the most rapidly growing region in Pennsylvania.

Your journey continues as you descend from the mountains into the Wyoming Valley area and the towns of Wilkes-Barre, Wyoming and Forty Fort. You will connect with the major waterway in this epic tale, the Susquehanna River.  Hear the role this majestic river has played for generations of Native Americans.
Visit the Battle of Wyoming Monument for a short presentation. The Battle of Wyoming was waged against Colonists by British and Loyalist troops, utilizing allied Native forces to round out their numbers. It is often looked at as one of the precipitating events that led Washington to order of Sullivan to lead the Army in this March.

Take a well-deserved rest and enjoy a welcome reception with beer and wine before dinner.  Following dinner will be a presentation to explore and discuss both the immediate and residual effects of Sullivan’s March on the Iroquois Nations.

Arrive at your hotel in Wilkes-Barre PA. Your luggage will be taken to your room by the hotel’s courteous staff. (For those passengers from the Wilkes-Barre area who would prefer to overnight in their own homes, we do offer a package rate minus the hotel stay. Call for price.)

Continue northwest to the picturesque town of Athens, PA, formerly known as Tioga Point, at the convergence of the Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers.

Tour the Tioga Point Museum, built where Fort Sullivan stood, before continuing on toward Elmira and the impending battle.  Arrive at the Newtown Battlefield State Park near Elmira, NY, for their Revolutionary War Weekend.
